Windows support for the editors is up to date, though.Side 1: Glory to the Lord.

Oh yeah, one word of warning: if you use a Macintosh, Yamaha has not ported the PLG editors to OS X (you need a Mac bootable in OS 9 to run the editors, Classic is not good enough) and the editors are a necessity to get the most out of the board. I'd suggest buying a used one (or a used DX200 groovebox it has a PLG card inside you can remove) since they sell for only about half what a new one costs.

The DX board can load DX7 patch data via sysex (and there's thousands of free DX7 patches available on the net you can download) and is in fact quieter than a real DX7. On the Motif ES each board gets 64 preset patches om power up and there is space for 64 of your own.

One weird quirk is if you install more than one of the same board they can't use each other's patches!!! The patch storage and recall is a little convoluted compared to native Motif voices but it's still simpler than dealing with sysex dumps for external gear. This is required if you want to use them in multitimbral setups or sequences but not needed if you just want to play a single patch. The board can use the effects of the host Motif if you set up "user patches". You need the supplied computer editor to do deep editing but simple tweakage is possible from the front panel.
